Microcosm

Hello, My Squishy Friends,

Good news all around this week. Here's why:

I got to spend the majority of the weekend refining and fine-tuning an essay on Zika Virus. And, as Professor Boiko explained we could make our essays "persuasive opinion pieces," I had free reign to rant about how governments around the globe are floundering (Really, New York, larvicides? Remember DDT in the 1950s? Ecuador, El Salvador, Jamaica, and Columbia, do you actually think telling women to not get pregnant is enough to knock Zika virus to it's knees) and how more money needs to be devoted towards basic virology research as opposed to research directed purely towards treating current outbreaks.

The activities midway was great. I got over 20 pre-frosh to sign the Free Fossils interest list, which is way more than how many freshman signed the interest list last fall in the activities mid-way (which typically piques the interest of more students). Perhaps they pre-frosh were drawn in by the free tee and the adorable Tea-Rex I drew, beckoning them to take a sample. Or the mini-posters I made describing the club and why it's awesome could have helped. Then, again, there's always my enthusiasm...or our new mascot, a giant dino Squishable filled with love and cuteness.

I am now on track for an A in Physics. Yes, it took over fourteen hours of studying, completing all relevant problems every version of exams 2 and 3 in the history of the course, attending the review session, memorizing all of the group problem-solving problems from week five on, reviewing with a friend (thanks, Priya!!!!), but it was worth it. Sheer determination and Professor Stephans' study tips have me bringing my A game and I plan to crush the final.

Microcosm. Another reason to love Science Writing Class. After completing my essay on Zika virus, I got to curl up in my Pikachu PJs and read all about the life of E. Coli. For me, this is better than any soap opera. I glimpse tragic love--oh! sweet plasma addiction, how E.coli love to loathe thee--, heroism--alas, to save our fellows, we must lie dormant in a biofilm--, and violent drama--unleash the colicins! I ate up this book quicker than K-12 eats up glucose-on, nom, nom :3

I hope your weeks were similarly cheery~

Squishy Love,

Amoeba
